They are a terrible choice by themselves, but in the face of the direction republicans want to take us, they are the best terrible choice you could make.

Part of me thinks, that his background as a former Naval officer and as an I’m sorry did I roll my eyes out loud cat vintage shirt, he is simply calculating that he doesn’t have a chance to win an election by running on issues, so he is trying to create controversies that act as distractions for the Dems. As in he would rather get drawn into a fight over whether slavery had benefits instead of what his healthcare plan is or why he wants to defund Social Security and Medicare. On the other hand, maybe he really is part of a Republican Party that has been taken over by extremists who do believe in a white wing fantasy that segregration really is the answer to all problems in the U.S. which would explain why Red States have been trying to gerrymander minority voters into large blocs that ultimately don’t have as much power as in if voting districts were “normal.” DeSantis is really just expressing his belief that America was founded as a country where white men were at the top, and everyone else served them, and that’s where we need to go again.
